Summary: Development of a lower pigmentation paint for an IP Top Pad that provides lower gloss and higher chemical resistance. Paint cost reduction: 2%.
Most Innovative Feature: Lower pigmentation paint (water based) allowing lower gloss and higher chemical resistance. Key innovation is also development of plastics color concentration.
Other Innovative Features: Roll goods are painted prior to Vacuum forming for maximum efficiency.
What Forming Process? Painting then vacuum forming.
First Time Process Used: Do not know.
Previous Process: Full - Hide Paint was used previously.
Tooling Innovations: Special spraymation procedure to confirm batch hiding, color, and gloss. Also, specific color concentration for TPO for color match and consistency.
New Material Developments: Formulate the correct resin, pigment, and flattener combination to maximize the desired combination of results.
Weight Savings: No weight savings.
Cost Savings: Paint cost reduced by 2%.
Cost Avoidance: Avoided potential solution of post painting to meet required gloss and chemical resistance. LOW SURFACE GLOSS IS A MAJOR REQUIREMENT FROM OEMS.
Direct Consumer Benefit: Yes. Better resistance to consumer chemicals.  Lower gloss look requested by GM.
Translates to Other Vehicles?: Yes, we are considering other applications.
Safety Benefits: Less potential veiling glare.
Environmental Benefits: This is a water base paint formulation.  Much lower VOCs than solvent.  Co-solvents used are more mild than traditional solvents used in solvent base paints.
Additional Comments: None.
